1. How Many shevatim are there ? Jacov had 12 son's, each a tribe or shevet. ArtScroll children's series and many other children's teaching aids leave the subject there - and we did the same with our song in Bereishit about the 12 Shevatim. These are also the names listed on the Breastplate. Later on, Yosef is split up into 2 tribes Ephriaim and Menashe. Later, the tribe of Levi is excluded from the census of the shevatim. This makes sence since they did not receive a portion of land. So you still have 12 tribes, but no Yosef or Levi - but Ephraim and Menashe in their place !
